In this blog post I will talk about the basic steps and information I wanted to include in my first draft and how I approached my College Debt Research Paper. The Reflective Writing video that we watched in class was a good source and a good outline of the type of writing that a research paper should have valid information from sources that I can back up.
Who did you work with to compose your research paper? Was this a good approach? I worked on my research paper by myself. I knew I could handle the research paper because of the topic. The topic I chose is something myself, and my family go through. My parents send me to college, but it's expensive and for most people they can't afford it. I tried to use as many sources regarding free tuition because it's it mentioned on a daily basis around the country. I wanted to make sure I mentioned the students who struggle to pay tuition bills. This was a good approach because the topic is something I'm familiar about and could write about. What rhetorical mode and genre are you using? The rhetorical mode I'm using would be argumentation and persuasion. Im arguing that college is way to expensive and it's not worth it for people who cannot afford it. I'm persuaded the country that we should give at least two years worth of college education for free for students. The genre I'm using is MLA. When did you write this project? Good approach? I wrote my paper throughout the week, but was not done on time. This wasn't a good approach because there were a lot of great sources on the Library Data base, but the problem was there wasn't much information of giving free college tuition throughout the entire four years for a student. I had trouble getting that information so I leaned on towards talking and getting sources for two free years of community college education for students. Where did you write this project? Good approach? I wrote the research paper on my dining room table where there was no distractions, and it was quiet. I also worked on it at school throughout the week and gathering all my sources. It was a good approach because there were no distractions and I could get my work done without any interruptions. Why did you choose to write about your chosen topic? Good choice? I chose to write about having free tuition because it's relevant to me, and will be relevant until I graduate and start to pay for my tuition by myself without my family paying it for me. It was a very good choice because I express the struggles that every student faces when they have to take out loans and hard worked money to go for a education that everyone should have an opportunity whether you have money or not. How did it feel to write this argument ("during, after, and since")? Do you have any "if only" moments that can help you revise the draft? I had a lot of personal opinions of why the country should allow free education. I didn't want the entire paper for me to express my opinions but I wanted to back them up with valid sources. During the process I focused on the importance of a college education. Everyone should be entitled to an education regardless of their financial status. After writing the paper I felt like I didn't have enough content to fully get my point across that this country needs to not make college too expensive for people to go straight to work and to not further their education. Since revising my paper I now know what I have to include to make a strong argument and to persuade the country to give free tuition to students. My only "if only" moments where to answer my questions with sources. How will you revise your argument? I will revise my argument by answering my questions with valid sources, and make sure that I fully explain my thoughts to make other people agree with me that students should attend a college where students don't have to worry about tuition bills and student loans.

In this next blog post I will annotate six sources relating to my research paper. My research question is "Should the government offer free college education to all citizens in the United States?"
My first source is Where to Invade Next. Walker, Morgan. “Michael Moore's 'Where to Invade Next' Idolises the Finnish Education System.” Finland Today, 20 Apr. 2016, finlandtoday.fi/michael-moores-where-to-invade-next-idolises-the-finnish-education-system/. The source is an overview of what the movie is about. The source is explains exactly where Moore traveled, the different types of people he meet with along the way and gives an overview of my research question, the education system. The education system is important in every country, but the article explains how in some countries college education is free. Here in American college is thousands and thousands of dollars, while students in other countries are debt-free. The text is a basically a summary of the entire movie. If someone never watched "Where to Invade Next" this article sets a good example of what the movie is about. Even after the movie, it a good refresher and thats why I used it as a source. The over view of each topic is touched on, and gives a statement on the education system. This is a good source for my research paper, because I can back up my point of explaining that other countries offer free college and still remain a strong country. Backing up my point references that if Slovenia can offer college, it can help my paper be stronger. My second source is Aiming Higher: Make College Tuition Free Weiner, Jon. “Aiming Higher: Make College Tuition Free.” Http://Web.b.ebscohost.com.libdb.dccc.edu/Ehost/Pdfviewer/Pdfviewer?Vid=3&Sid=734c4afb-f2f2-491a-92ec-997ab4eb08dd%40sessionmgr102,6Apr.2015, web.b.ebscohost.com.libdb.dccc.edu/ehost/pdfviewer/pdfviewer?vid=3&sid=734c4afb-f2f2-491a-92ec-997ab4eb08dd%40sessionmgr102 The source talks about the benefits, universities in the past that had free education. The article talks about how college tuition is so high, and how will these students be able to pay for college when they are in debt? They also talk about how other counties also free college education such as Sweden, Denmark and Finland. The article stated facts, and brought up other countries that allow free educations for their students. There is important information that I can use to support my claim that students here in America should be able to get a college education. I can use this information to support my claim. It's a good source to pull information out that will help me make a good paper that makes sense and I'll have valid arguments. My third source is The Reality of Free Community College Cubberly, Fran. “The Reality Of Free Community College Tuition.” Http://Web.b.ebscohost.com.libdb.dccc.edu/Ehost/Pdfviewer/Pdfviewer?Vid=4&Sid=ceaa945c-18f9-41be-a4d6-dba259e44ccc%40sessionmgr104, 2015, web.b.ebscohost.com.libdb.dccc.edu/ehost/pdfviewer/pdfviewer?vid=4&sid=ceaa945c-18f9-41be-a4d6-dba259e44ccc%40sessionmgr104. The article states that people get a job rather then go to college because of the tuition payments. Many students chose to work rather then go to school because they are frighten with how much debt they could be in by the time they get out of school. Working towards a 2-year community college could help students want to go and get an education. The text focuses a lot on the topics I would talk about in my research paper. People are scared of the money situation. Why is college tuition way to expensive? Money is an important factor why students aren't able to go. The reality is people rather just work then further their education because of the tuition bills. My primary focus on the idea that college should be free is because of the money. This article pin points a lot of what I want to discuss and backup my claim. Many students would get an education if the amount of money it costs would be taken away. The government should assist students who want an education for themselves, and jobs around the world. My fourth source is White House Adding $100 Million Program to Tuition-Free Community College Push Morris, Catherine. “White House Adding $100 Million Program to Tuition-Free Community College Push.” Http://Web.a.ebscohost.com.libdb.dccc.edu/Ehost/Pdfviewer/Pdfviewer?Vid=10&Sid=bd630bf8-3034-4c7d-8505-976ef0baf007%40sessionmgr4006, web.a.ebscohost.com.libdb.dccc.edu/ehost/pdfviewer/pdfviewer?vid=10&sid=bd630bf8-3034-4c7d-8505-976ef0baf007%40sessionmgr4006. The article talks about how the White House gave $100 million dollars to community colleges to help strengthen the program. Obama proposed America's College Promise which meant community college would be free for students who fit the academic standard. The article talks about President Obama. He seemed interested in helping the students and their community colleges to have a better program by giving millions of dollars. It's important to help students have a good college so they have the correct material and experience to be able to succeed in life. Referencing President Obama in my paper will make my paper 10x better. Knowing what he did to help community colleges to push to not having students pay for college tuition was extremely important, and writing about it in my research paper. Mentioning what he did will back up my claims on why free tuition is important to students, especially if they are not able to afford it, but still want a equal chance to have a education. No student should put off getting an education due to money problems. My fifth source is: Maryland proposal for free community college follows national trend. But results aren't clear. Knezevich, Alison. “Maryland Proposal for Free Community College Is Part of National Trend. But Does It Work?” Baltimoresun.com, 13 Apr. 2018, www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/education/higher-ed/bs-md-community-college-trend-20180412-story.html. State lawmakers in Maryland are proposing that students in Maryland might be get offered free community college. They haven't decided if it will be signed yet, but it's a step in the right direction. In the article they talk about how families worry how they will pay for their kids to attend college. I think what Maryland is doing is a step in the right direction, and other states in the United States should follow what they are doing. We should aid the students who want an education to have that ability to do it, without money being involved. Money shouldn't get in the way of someone deciding whether to continue their education or go straight to work after high school. Mentioning what Maryland is doing to allow students to have access to free community its college will help my claim by using them as an example, that this is an actually thing, and it should be a trend. More states should follow their lead and help students/families who are struggling to get their kid an education instead of worry how they will pay the tuition bill. My sixth source is FACT SHEET- While House Unveils America's College Promise Proposal: Tuition-Free Community College For Responsible Students “FACT SHEET - White House Unveils America's College Promise Proposal: Tuition-Free Community College for Responsible Students.” National Archives and Records Administration, National Archives and Records Administration, 9 Jan. 2015, obamawhitehouse.archives.gov/the-press-office/2015/01/09/fact-sheet-white-house-unveils-america-s-college-promise-proposal-tuitio. The article states the proposal to allow the first two years of college be free to students ONLY if they get good grades, focused and are on their way to graduate. 9 million students can benefit from this new proposal. The proposal focuses on the guidelines of who the free tuition who go to. I understand they don't want to put money into people who don't care about their education, but focus mainly on the students who earn good grades and are on their way to graduate. The proposal spares tuition for the first two years of college. Without having to pay for the first two years saves thousands of dollars. I will use this for my paper because of the proposal. The proposal is good information to use while backing up that students will have the first half of college tuition free. The proposal is liable information when arguing why I think college should be free, it motivates students to want to do well because the government is letting them go to school for free. In this next blog post, I will talk about relevant discussion topics that stood out in Where to Invade Next. The topics I'm about to discuss are brought up everyday by people who want to make a change in the world and also a change in people.
Topic: Free Education Research Question: Should College Univerisity's in American provide American citizen students with free college tuition? Argument: Yes, I believe citizens of American should get access to free tuition. Not everyone is able to afford a college education. Education should be easy access to everyone who wants it. Especially if someone wants to go to college to get a degree but is unable to pay for it. It's unfair to the person who is willing to put effort in, and get a degree and have a good paying job so they can provide for themselves/their families. Topic: Prison system Research Question: Is the Prison system here in America, 21st century slavery? Argument: Do prisons treat their inmates like slaves? Inmates here in America are able to work when they are incarcerated to earn money. But are they getting paid well enough for the amount of work they do? I wouldn't say all prisons work their inmates like animals but they might take advantage of the opportunity. Why pay workers a lot of money, when the prison can pay their inmates a little amount to consume their goods? Topic: Abortion (pro-choice, pro-life) Research Question: Should women be able to chose what they want with their own bodies? Argument: I agree that women should be able to chose what they want to do with their own bodies because they have a right too. Being a women is incredibly challenging enough, why should the government have a say on what a women should do with her own body? Abortion has being a topic for some time now in the media, but abortion isn't just able taking away a life. People don't understand that their can be problems under the surface. For example, rape, or being to young to have a child. Having a child is responsibly, but having a child unplanned is extremely difficult. If a women chose abortion, she should be able to. In this blog post I will talk about a film maker named Micheal Moore who deports from the United States and goes on an adventure around the world. He visits multiple different countries and talks to the citizens, the leaders and learns different beliefs that the country believes in and how they run their system. As Moore's journey embarks, he marks the territory where he visited that day and what he learned about the country with the United States flag and addresses that what that particular country is doing, the United States should do the same because it seems to be working for them. I'll also explain logos, ethos, pathos, telos, and kairos and why they are relevant in the blog. In the documentary Where to Invade Next, Michael Moore traveled outside the United States and saw different perspectives of what other countries in the world handle different types of situations such as, the prison system, education, sex-ed, and health care. He traveled from Italy, to Finland and talked to multiple residents, or leaders from that particular country. Michael Moore interviewed different people and asked about how they run their government. Michael Moore then would compare the United States, to that particular country and how the US should use their ideas and beliefs to make the United States a better country. He then would go ahead a plant the United States flag right where he visited. Michael Moore visited prisons in Norway. He visited a low security prison, and a maximum security prison. Moore was escorted around the prison where police officers aren't armed, and are lenient on the inmates, because the inmates aren't violent. The inmates are barley locked up but instead they learn how to live in the real world. They learn to cook, and communicate to other inmates, and hav access to education. In Slovenia, Moore visited a college campus where the students are given free tuition. Students don't have to pay tuition in the future, and will not be overwhelmed with student debt when they get out of college. In Italy, Moore learned about their paid holidays, and how they have a paid honeymoon. Also they get a 2-hour lunch break throughout their work hours. Michael Moore traveled the world to get a grasp of what other countries offer to their citizens and how it seems to be working for them. Moore explained that the United States should do more of what their doing to make our country better. How does Michael Moore establish ethos? When Moore was talking to the citizens, or the leaders of that particular country he gave valid reasoning behind what the United States versus what the county did. Moore had credible sources. Moore legit went across the country to discuss these topics with people who live in that country. All The way he organized the documentary didn't bash the United States directly, but Moore explained that we should take some of their ideas and beliefs and use it in our government. Moore was honest, and straight forward and wasn't tip toeing around with his questions. How does Michael Moore use logos? Michael Moore had sources from all over the world. The logic and reasoning behind all the questions that Moore discussed with the citizens were real people, who experienced what it's like to live in that country and what they do, and don't do in their government system. All of the questions that Moore asked either were people who lived in that country, or the person who ran the country. In fact he even had questions for the police officers as well. All these people gave valid answers to whatever Moore questioned. The answers that these people gave were strong enough to back up. How does Michael Moore appeal to pathos? His emotion appeal in the beginning of the film was funny. He interviewed a couple from Italy who had a 13th salary pay, a paid honeymoon vacation, and explained that the United States gets none of that. The couple looked at him funny, but it seemed like it was a way for the audience to laugh but not take it too serious. The emotional appeal through out the movie was desire. Moore just wanted to learn about their country and explain to that how ours works and wants to take ideas back to the US. Moore wanted to expand his learning for him to learn, but also his audience. He wanted his audience to be able to learn about different countries as well. What is Michael Moore's telos? Michael Moore's purpose of this whole movie was for the audience and the people back home that these countries are thriving while were barley making it. These countries are calm and collected and treat their neighbors, friends, inmates with kindness and respect. The countries thrive to make their people happy. The purpose was in hopes for us as Americans to treat each other, and our government with respect in hopes that we can change and take these ideas from these other countries who are have a good system and that it's working for them to bring those ideas here back to America. What is the kairos of this film? The setting, the time and the place of the film takes place from Italy, to Finland, to Solvenia. This film takes us all over the world. This documentary seems like it's recent. The quality of the film still relates to the problems that this country face on a daily basis here in America. The movie is still relevant, and it discusses topic that are still talked about to this day. |
