In this next blog post I will annotate six sources relating to my research paper. My research question is "Should the government offer free college education to all citizens in the United States?"
My first source is Where to Invade Next. Walker, Morgan. “Michael Moore's 'Where to Invade Next' Idolises the Finnish Education System.” Finland Today, 20 Apr. 2016, finlandtoday.fi/michael-moores-where-to-invade-next-idolises-the-finnish-education-system/. The source is an overview of what the movie is about. The source is explains exactly where Moore traveled, the different types of people he meet with along the way and gives an overview of my research question, the education system. The education system is important in every country, but the article explains how in some countries college education is free. Here in American college is thousands and thousands of dollars, while students in other countries are debt-free. The text is a basically a summary of the entire movie. If someone never watched "Where to Invade Next" this article sets a good example of what the movie is about. Even after the movie, it a good refresher and thats why I used it as a source. The over view of each topic is touched on, and gives a statement on the education system. This is a good source for my research paper, because I can back up my point of explaining that other countries offer free college and still remain a strong country. Backing up my point references that if Slovenia can offer college, it can help my paper be stronger. My second source is Aiming Higher: Make College Tuition Free Weiner, Jon. “Aiming Higher: Make College Tuition Free.” Http://Web.b.ebscohost.com.libdb.dccc.edu/Ehost/Pdfviewer/Pdfviewer?Vid=3&Sid=734c4afb-f2f2-491a-92ec-997ab4eb08dd%40sessionmgr102,6Apr.2015, web.b.ebscohost.com.libdb.dccc.edu/ehost/pdfviewer/pdfviewer?vid=3&sid=734c4afb-f2f2-491a-92ec-997ab4eb08dd%40sessionmgr102 The source talks about the benefits, universities in the past that had free education. The article talks about how college tuition is so high, and how will these students be able to pay for college when they are in debt? They also talk about how other counties also free college education such as Sweden, Denmark and Finland. The article stated facts, and brought up other countries that allow free educations for their students. There is important information that I can use to support my claim that students here in America should be able to get a college education. I can use this information to support my claim. It's a good source to pull information out that will help me make a good paper that makes sense and I'll have valid arguments. My third source is The Reality of Free Community College Cubberly, Fran. “The Reality Of Free Community College Tuition.” Http://Web.b.ebscohost.com.libdb.dccc.edu/Ehost/Pdfviewer/Pdfviewer?Vid=4&Sid=ceaa945c-18f9-41be-a4d6-dba259e44ccc%40sessionmgr104, 2015, web.b.ebscohost.com.libdb.dccc.edu/ehost/pdfviewer/pdfviewer?vid=4&sid=ceaa945c-18f9-41be-a4d6-dba259e44ccc%40sessionmgr104. The article states that people get a job rather then go to college because of the tuition payments. Many students chose to work rather then go to school because they are frighten with how much debt they could be in by the time they get out of school. Working towards a 2-year community college could help students want to go and get an education. The text focuses a lot on the topics I would talk about in my research paper. People are scared of the money situation. Why is college tuition way to expensive? Money is an important factor why students aren't able to go. The reality is people rather just work then further their education because of the tuition bills. My primary focus on the idea that college should be free is because of the money. This article pin points a lot of what I want to discuss and backup my claim. Many students would get an education if the amount of money it costs would be taken away. The government should assist students who want an education for themselves, and jobs around the world. My fourth source is White House Adding $100 Million Program to Tuition-Free Community College Push Morris, Catherine. “White House Adding $100 Million Program to Tuition-Free Community College Push.” Http://Web.a.ebscohost.com.libdb.dccc.edu/Ehost/Pdfviewer/Pdfviewer?Vid=10&Sid=bd630bf8-3034-4c7d-8505-976ef0baf007%40sessionmgr4006, web.a.ebscohost.com.libdb.dccc.edu/ehost/pdfviewer/pdfviewer?vid=10&sid=bd630bf8-3034-4c7d-8505-976ef0baf007%40sessionmgr4006. The article talks about how the White House gave $100 million dollars to community colleges to help strengthen the program. Obama proposed America's College Promise which meant community college would be free for students who fit the academic standard. The article talks about President Obama. He seemed interested in helping the students and their community colleges to have a better program by giving millions of dollars. It's important to help students have a good college so they have the correct material and experience to be able to succeed in life. Referencing President Obama in my paper will make my paper 10x better. Knowing what he did to help community colleges to push to not having students pay for college tuition was extremely important, and writing about it in my research paper. Mentioning what he did will back up my claims on why free tuition is important to students, especially if they are not able to afford it, but still want a equal chance to have a education. No student should put off getting an education due to money problems. My fifth source is: Maryland proposal for free community college follows national trend. But results aren't clear. Knezevich, Alison. “Maryland Proposal for Free Community College Is Part of National Trend. But Does It Work?” Baltimoresun.com, 13 Apr. 2018, www.baltimoresun.com/news/maryland/education/higher-ed/bs-md-community-college-trend-20180412-story.html. State lawmakers in Maryland are proposing that students in Maryland might be get offered free community college. They haven't decided if it will be signed yet, but it's a step in the right direction. In the article they talk about how families worry how they will pay for their kids to attend college. I think what Maryland is doing is a step in the right direction, and other states in the United States should follow what they are doing. We should aid the students who want an education to have that ability to do it, without money being involved. Money shouldn't get in the way of someone deciding whether to continue their education or go straight to work after high school. Mentioning what Maryland is doing to allow students to have access to free community its college will help my claim by using them as an example, that this is an actually thing, and it should be a trend. More states should follow their lead and help students/families who are struggling to get their kid an education instead of worry how they will pay the tuition bill. My sixth source is FACT SHEET- While House Unveils America's College Promise Proposal: Tuition-Free Community College For Responsible Students “FACT SHEET - White House Unveils America's College Promise Proposal: Tuition-Free Community College for Responsible Students.” National Archives and Records Administration, National Archives and Records Administration, 9 Jan. 2015, obamawhitehouse.archives.gov/the-press-office/2015/01/09/fact-sheet-white-house-unveils-america-s-college-promise-proposal-tuitio. The article states the proposal to allow the first two years of college be free to students ONLY if they get good grades, focused and are on their way to graduate. 9 million students can benefit from this new proposal. The proposal focuses on the guidelines of who the free tuition who go to. I understand they don't want to put money into people who don't care about their education, but focus mainly on the students who earn good grades and are on their way to graduate. The proposal spares tuition for the first two years of college. Without having to pay for the first two years saves thousands of dollars. I will use this for my paper because of the proposal. The proposal is good information to use while backing up that students will have the first half of college tuition free. The proposal is liable information when arguing why I think college should be free, it motivates students to want to do well because the government is letting them go to school for free.
