In the short story, Hills Like White Elephants (Ernest Hemingway) two people, an American and girl sat outside in the shade and outside of a building. They both were waiting for the express to arrive. They both had a few drinks and made small talk, and they also seemed a bit suspicious. They seemed to be both bickering at each other while they were having a conversation. After reading the story, questions still remain, does she stay in her relationship with the man? And when have I made a important choice to stay in a relationship or leave a relationship -- OR -- stay or leave a difficult situation?
Does she stay in her relationship with the man? I don't think she will stay in the relationship any longer. After reading this, I was left confused. I don't think they have nearly enough conversation to even want to pursue the relationship anymore at this point. But, what they were talking about seemed important in some way. They were both giving each other the cold shoulder. But they just kept saying "another beer?" and kept trying different drinks. They eventually started to say things like "and you think then we'll be all right and be happy". Also things like "we'll be fine afterward. Just like we were before." The story never told us exactly what they were talking about, but it seemed suspicious, almost like they were lying to themselves. I think they wanted to make themselves believe that something was fine, when really it's not. Almost like the man was forcing something, maybe forcing her believe things will be okay in the end. When have I made a important choice to stay in a relationship or leave a relationship -- OR -- stay or leave a difficult situation? I never really had a serious relationship with anyone. But, I have had some important relationships with friends. I've been friends with her since 6th grade and we did everything together. We had sleepovers, went out to eat almost every other day, we were in the same classes together and we were just overall inseparable. We practically grew up together. From middle school up until senior year of high school. We would spend a week together down the shore for my birthday ever summer up until last summer. She was my best friend and nothing could happen that would not stop us from being friends. It just seemed up till senior year things started to rapidly change. We started having stupid fights, but nothing that would end our friendship. Everybody goes through arguments or disagreements, but we agree to disagree and move on. We still would hangout, still have sleep overs and laugh at the most stupidest things ever. Senior year we started drifting, we didn't really make time for each other anymore. Maybe the friendship was toxic and it was mutual just to get separate ways. She was moving away from college. We never ended on a bad term, I just think we were best if we just parted ways, and moved on.

They were definitely lying to themselves. They both knew nothing would be the same between them after they made such a big decision. They would have that guilt or regret hovering over their relationship like that cloud in the story. The American just wanted the girl to simply brush it off like it was one of the easiest decisions she would ever have to make....

After reading this all I can say is that, your relationship with her was not toxic. People fall apart sometimes to find them self, and that's the cycle of life.
